The new Student Success Center at California State University, Long Beach was completed in early 2019. The project included complete renovation and seismic strengthening of a three-story classroom/science building (“PH2”) with one level partially subterranean. The new building houses various student services, as well as general classroom and office space.

The original science building was originally constructed in two phases in the 1950s, and was split into seismically separated East and West wings. The building and is constructed with concrete roof and floor structures supported by concrete columns and concrete bearing walls.

A complete renovation, addition, and seismic strengthening of the non-ductile concrete building was completed. The renovation changed the original circulation pattern through the central corridor, and introduced a new, more inviting and open lobby/entrance. The project scope included all new HVAC equipment, new electrical and telecom, new elevator, significant ADA upgrades, and a full seismic retrofit of the “Priority 2” building to CSU standards – including tying the separate wings together to eliminate the original seismic joint. The building was designed to a LEED Gold standard.
