Last week MHP Structural Engineers participated in the 20th Annual AAUW California Long Beach STEM Career Conference held at Sato Academy of Math & Science. Attendance is limited to 7th and 8th-grade girls since women are still underrepresented in STEM careers and AAUW’s mission is to advance equity for women and girls. Since 2003, 3,135 girls have participated in the event.

MHP Associate Principal Kathy Rantowich, S.E. & Senior Project Engineer, Reihaneh Sarraf, PhD, SE. led a “Structures Workshop” which consisted of a presentation and hands-on activity in which they built structures using spaghetti and marshmallows to test their stability on shaky ground (in this case, in a pan of Jell-O). Kathy has been attending the STEM conference for over 10 years in hopes of inspiring young women to join the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
