MHP Services: Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit

The Pinole Point Business Park in Richmond, California was originally developed in 1999 and is comprised of three concrete tilt-up buildings. Although the buildings are of fairly recent vintage, a due-diligence evaluation by another engineer identified serious seismic deficiencies in the transverse steel braced frames utilized in two of the three buildings. MHP completed a seismic evaluation, and concurred with the earlier study. MHP subsequently designed strengthening for the two buildings, utilizing viscous dampers at the larger structure to avoid the necessity of additional bays of braced frame, which would have negatively affected building functionality. Non-linear time-history modeling was completed to properly “tune” the dampers such that existing foundations and diaphragms were minimally impacted.
