The three-story Communications Building for the University was constructed on a hillside site with a structural steel framing system. MHP used the proprietary SidePlateTM steel moment frame connection system allowing for reduction of lateral drift for the structure, thereby minimizing the necessary seismic separation between the building and the adjacent hillside. The building incorporates numerous structurally challenging features such as second floor lecture halls with sloped floors, a high volume sound studio, and a second floor set back to allow natural lighting of a large student lounge area.
