MHP provided extensive renovations to three existing buildings originally constructed in the late 1950’s, and consisting of two- and three-story brick masonry and concrete structures. The design intent was to upgrade and repair the classrooms buildings with the latest technology while maintaining the historical look of the campus.
MHP structural design services for Buildings 7, 11 and 26 included detailing for new openings in brick masonry walls with infill of existing openings to accommodate new classroom layouts as determined by the Architect. New air handling units were creatively maneuvered within existing penthouses to minimize the visual impact on the campus. The project proved to be challenging when it came time to coordinate all the conduits and mechanical units required by the other trades. MHP worked to balance the other trades’ needs while also maintaining the overall integrity of the brick masonry shear walls.
