MHP Services:                      Structural Design

Project Status:                      Completed 2009 and 2011

Kroger Foods greatly expanded their distribution capabilities with the construction of their Compton facility (216,000 sq ft) and Riverside facility (500,000 sq ft). Both distribution centers include substantial freezer/cooler storage. The buildings both utilize special concentric steel braced frames as the lateral force-resisting system.

The Compton facility includes a multi-level roof with maximum clear height in the freezer and deep cooler rooms of 80 feet to accommodate high-lift automated storage and retrieval equipment. Special detailing was used to tie the structure seismically yet minimize the disruption of temperature envelopes. Slab designs included shrinkage compensating concrete for the dock area as well as up to 16,000 sq ft single pour areas without control joints. The Riverside facility required a structural design that accommodates the constraints of a building that handles a wide range of food products. Close coordination with building operations, maintenance, and mechanical systems were required.
