The Citadel multi-use commercial complex included rehabilitation, preservation and seismic strengthening of the 1929 six-story castle-like administration building, two new four-story steel framed office buildings, two new two-story concrete tilt-up office buildings, 157,000 square feet of one- story retail space and food court, and structural support and preservation of the Original Assyrian motif outer factory wall.
Structural challenges included a fast-track schedule and multiple construction types (steel moment frame, concrete tilt-up, wood frame) as well as rehabilitation and seismic strengthening of the historic, structurally complex administration building. Detailed computer modelling utilizing site-specific ground motion response spectra were employed to develop a complex lateral load resisting system for the historical administration building with tiered set-backs.
